Head of Unilever’s Nutrition Patents
“New technologies will be required to secure a sustainable future by transforming the global food chain. In order for partners to work together confidently to provide new innovations, intellectual property is essential.
Before beginning work as an ice cream scientist at Unilever in 1996, Danny Keenan was originally trained as a chemist and earned a DPhil in food biopolymers. In 2003, Danny changed occupations to become a patent attorney after realising the importance of intellectual property to the creative sector through the protection of ideas he developed while creating new ice cream technologies.
He currently serves as the head of the international patent group that safeguards Unilever’s advancements in nutrition. The group wants to fulfil the Future Foods Commitments that serve as the foundation for the business’s nutrition division and its nutrition business, and it is his ambition to help shape a fair global food system. Danny Keenan is also president of the UK IP Federation.

My name is Daniel Keenan, but everyone calls me Dansby.
I grew up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and have played baseball since I was two years old. I have played at junior colleges in Dayton, Ohio, and Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Now I am settled at what should be my final college, Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. I am getting ready for my first season here, which I am excited for as the team has been leading the conference for the last couple years. I was raised by an Irish family; my grandmother was from Westport, Co. Mayo, and my grandfather was from Roscommon. Me and my only brother, Riley, Irish danced and played the fife in a fife and drum band.
That was through the East Side Irish American Club in Cleveland, where we spent a lot of time with the family. I still have family in Ireland, but the only one with whom I communicate often is my father’s cousin, Fergus Keenan, in Dublin. I am currently studying accounting and training to be in the US Air Force. Given that one of those two options works itself out, I will either be an accountant or a pilot. Other than that, I am just enjoying college and playing the sport I love.
